Why Wharton’s Jelly?

You might have heard about the controversy surrounding Liveyon, a company that sells umbilical cord blood products. In 2018, Liveyon had to recall their products after many people who received their injections became very ill. What is it about Liveyon’s products that would make people sick?

Umbilical cord blood has the potential to become tainted and can transmit infectious diseases. This is why at Southern Stem Cell Institute, we use stem cells from an area of the umbilical cord called Wharton’s Jelly, not umbilical cord blood, and an FDA-cleared lab that is third-party tested for sterility.

What is Wharton’s Jelly?

Wharton’s Jelly is a gelatinous substance found in the umbilical cord matrix that is a rich form of mesenchymal stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent, which means that they have the remarkable ability to differentiate to form adipocytes, cartilage, bone, tendons, muscle, and skin. In other words, mesenchymal stem cells are able to regenerate and rebuild these parts of the body that may have worn down or become damaged due to age or injury.

Why we’ve never used umbilical cord blood, and why we never will:

Although umbilical cord blood contains general, growth factor, and homeostatic cytokines (signaling molecules that mediate and regulate immunity, inflammation and hematopoiesis) the concentration of mesenchymal stem cells found in umbilical cord blood is therapeutically insignificant. The umbilical cord matrix, however, yields a high concentration of mesenchymal stem cells, and it also contains scaffolding cytokines in addition to the other kinds found in cord blood.

But that’s not the only reason why Wharton’s Jelly is such an incredible substance: the umbilical cord matrix where Wharton’s Jelly is found is neutral zone. This means that the substance doesn’t contain transmissible diseases, and there is no risk of developing any allergies that a donor mother or baby might carry. We’re proud of the fact that our lab thoroughly vets donor candidates to ensure that they are not carriers of transmissible diseases anyway.

At Southern Stem Cell Institute, we are committed to research and using state of the art stem cell and regenerative therapies in an ethical, safe manner. This means that we would only ever treat our patients with products that are of the highest quality from labs we can trust.
